How to remove filler words from a video

The um sits in the middle of the best answer of the day. In Lumière you do not hunt for it on a timeline: you cut it in the transcript, and it is gone from the video. One button sweeps out the filler words, another shortens the long silences, and every cut stays reversible.

How text-based filler removal works

Lumière writes down every word with its own time. Because each word knows which frames it owns, a cut in the text is a cut in the picture. Filler words are found by matching the transcript against a list of known fillers for the spoken language. No AI is guessing at your edit, and the step is free.

Which languages work

Filler-word removal knows English, German, French, Spanish and Hungarian. It picks the list from the language Lumière detected in your recording. Typical entries are hesitation sounds such as um and uh in English, äh and ähm in German, euh in French, eh in Spanish and öö in Hungarian.

The lists are fixed and short. A few entries are also ordinary words in some situations, so read through the result. A word you did not want gone comes back with one click.

Step by step in Studio

  1. Upload your recording in Import. Transcription is free and starts by itself.
  2. Write a short brief and press "Draft the cut". This is the step that costs lumens: 1 ✦ per started source minute. Text trim works on the transcript of your cut.
  3. Open Review & trim and choose the "Text trim" tab. Every word and every pause is on screen.
  4. Press "Remove filler words". The ums and uhs are cut in one go.
  5. Press "Tighten pauses" to shorten long silences across the cut.
  6. Click any word or pause to cut it, or to bring it back. "Restore every word" undoes all text edits.
  7. Press "Looks right · continue", then render. Rendering is included in your plan.

A hard cut, and a clean hand-off

A text cut is a hard cut. Lumière does not invent frames to hide the join, so play the result before you publish. On a talking head a removed "um" often sounds natural; on a wide shot with a visible jump, you may want a cutaway.

If you finish in an editing program, export the cut as .otio for DaVinci Resolve or as .edl for any editor. The clips point at your original files, so you can extend any cut there. Exports for Premiere Pro and Final Cut Pro are marked Coming and are not available yet.

What to know before you start

  • Text trim shows up to 3,000 words. For longer transcripts Studio sends you to the classic editor.
  • Subtitles follow the cut. Generate them after you tighten, then correct the lines last.
  • The Trial output is watermarked. The Trial gives you 15 ✦ once, with no card, enough to try this on a few short clips.
